The Domesday Book of 1086, listed Wootton as having 26 residents (20 villagers and six slaves).  By 1901 the population had risen to 1,252. The population remained fairly steady throughout the first half of the 20th century but by 1971 the population had climbed to 2,386,  increase within ten years. According to the 2001 Census, the area covered by Wootton Parish had 4,230 residents who lived in 1,643 households. This census states that the median age of the population is 39, 74% describe their health as good and 1.78% of economically active people aged 16–74 were unemployed. Although there has been little development since 2001, outline planning permission has been given for a further 1200 houses  and a small industrial employment area which are expected to be built in the 2012 to 2015 timeframe.

Facilities in the village include a Library, a Post Office, two general convenience shops (Costcutter and One Stop), a Garage selling petrol which also has a small shop and a take away called Pat's Pizza.
There are two Schools (Upper and Lower) and two Nursery Playgroups in the village.
The Churches in the villages are St Mary's Church of England, the New Life Methodist Church and the Baptist Church.
Wootton Vale Healthy Living Centre was opened in 2006 and services the medical needs of the village. There is also a Pharmacy in the Village.
The Rose and Crown,  The Black Horse, The Cock Inn and the Fox and Duck are the public houses in the village.
There is also a small industrial area in the village.

Wootton has a vibrant community with many Clubs and Organisations including Scouts and Guides and Football Clubs. The two Village Halls host many of the activities in the Village.

There are four football pitches on the recreation ground together with youth shelters, a kick wall, a Multi User Games Area and  a children's Play Area which is being upgraded in 2009.
On the Memorial Hall Green there is another Children's Play Area and a grassy area for general play.
